Die Projektgemeinschaft Behnisch Architekten und Pohl Architekten konnte beim World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Barcelona mit ihrer Max Aicher-Arena, dem Eisstadion in Inzell (siehe BauNetz-Meldung vom 11. März 2011), als einziger deutscher Vertreter einen Preis gewinnen: die Auszeichnung World Sport Building of the Year.
Das WAF findet seit 2008 jährlich in Barcelona statt und verteilt neben dem Hauptpreis World Building of the Year inzwischen 25 weitere Preise in eben so vielen Kategorien. Die Jurierung erfolgt dabei öffentlich: Repräsentanten der Büros präsentieren vor Publikum und Preisgericht. Laut Paul Finch, Chefredakteur der Architectural Review und somit Schirmherr der Veranstaltung, sind in diesem Jahr mit über 700 Einreichungen aus 59 Ländern mehr Teilnehmer als je zuvor in Barcelona zusammengekommen.
Die Auszeichnung World Building of the Year ging an ein junges Büro aus dem Gastland. Die katalanischen Entwerfer von Cloud 9 konnten die Architektenjury mit ihrem Office Space Media-ITC überzeugen (siehe BauNetz-Meldung vom 4. Februar 2010). Preisträgerin war im vergangenen Jahr übrigens Zaha Hadid mit dem Maxxi-Museum in Rom (siehe BauNetz-Meldung vom 29. Oktober 2010).
Warum das WAF im mitteleuropäischen Raum so wenig Anklang findet, könnte der eher kommerzielle Charakter des Festivals erklären: Allein die Einreichung eines Projektes kostet eine Gebühr von 500 Euro. Wer sich anschließend auf der Shortlist wiederfindet, ist verpflichtet, auf eigene Kosten anzureisen, um das Projekt vorzustellen – und muss dann noch das Eintrittsgeld von etwa 600 Euro pro Person für die dreitägige Veranstaltung berappen. Dennoch hält Event-Moderator Finch sein Festival für „wahrhaft inklusiv“. Nicht nur international renommierte Büros, sondern auch kleine Büros seien vertreten und würden prämiert.
